10 Must Have Tips for New Bloggers

I have learnt alot these few months from trial and error. I wished that there was someone out there who could tell me from the start what to do when creating a blog and to attract good traffic so that i would not have to waste precious time, much heartache and energy going around in circles.

But i also understand that i could not have learnt without getting my feet wet. Any way, it is the purpose of this blog to try all methods.

Ok. These are what i have learnt on hindsight. Hope it is useful to you.

***10 Must Have Tips for New Bloggers***

#1: Use WordPress instead of blogspot

Personally i find that Wordpress is better in terms of design and functionality than blogpot although many bloggers like to start with blogspot or blogger.com. Consider carefully and plan well from the start as it is quite costly in terms of Ranking (technorati, PageRank etc.) and traffic to switch later on. Many bloggers do not think long term when starting a blog (that includes myself and that is why i am still stuck with this blogspot although i have a wordpress one at projectheavytraffic.com).

#2: Place Google Adsense only when you have good traffic

Ever wonder why those professional bloggers earn hundreds of dollars from Adsense and you earn only a few cents?

Another mistake i made which i have realised from hindsight is that new blogger should not be too eager to place google adsense on their blog else they will be placed at lowest Ad Band which is meaningless as you only earn a few cents. Place Google Adsense (or any other click per pay ads) only when you have good traffic and when you are eligible for a higher band.

What you should do is to concentrate on churning good articles.

#3: Have a traffic counter right from the start

This is not so much to show how many visitors you have but to measure your traffic flow. It is a must have tools for new bloggers. You get the counters from Sitemeter, statcounter or any other traffic measuring tool. Just type 'counter' in google will yield you a long list. Without measuring tool, you are like driving to an unknown place without a map or doing business without a business plan.

Measuring is only part of it. You have to do something about it once you know the numbers.

#4: Technorati, My blog Log, Blog explosion and RSS FEED

I recommend new bloggers to sign up Technorati, My blog Log, Blog Explosion and RSS Feed right from the start to attract traffic. A site is only useful when you promote it. I received good traffic from each of these sources. Technorati is a THE BLOG LIST, a must for new bloggers who want their blog known. My Blog Log is a community site where you can promote your latest post and ask bloggers to join your community. Blog explosion is a manual traffic exchange site and it is getting popular!

Many new bloggers (including myself) have ignored RSS feed at the early stage of blogging, which can cost much traffic. I have since learnt the importance of RSS and is now constantly monitoring my feed at feedburner.

#5: SEO and Keywords are important

We cannot be always replying comments, visiting blogs and exchanging links. We need organic traffic from search engine to be sustainable. That is why Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) and keywords are so important. New bloggers should start right from the start because it takes time to build up traffic from Search Engine. Read my post on 5 tips to increase keyword success and Search Engine Optimisation Part 1

#6: Do not Clutter your blog

Personally, this is one of the hardest points to master. Although we know that cluttering the blog will slow down the loading speed, we still face many tamptations of adding interesting widgets and affiliate badges to our blog sidebar. We keep fighting the lure of decorating our blog with awards and chat box and blog directory buttons. What i do is to trim my blog fats from time to time. And for this blog. i have changed to a simplier template. You have to keep trying...

Compare this blog with my projectheavytraffic.com blog.

#7: Experiment on Different traffic methods.

This blog is a result of experimenting with different traffic methods. I dare say that it would not be what it is now if i did not participate in meme or tagging game. Some says that it is not an orthodox method but says who? All methods are ways of beating the system. And who own the system anyway. Do you want to let one system, say PageRank, rules the blog universe? Have an open mind, you will receive surprising result!

#8: Having the correct Attitudes

Having the correct attitude is important . Do not start a blog to milk for money immediately. it will not be sustainable Please read my post on 5 Attitudes in making your blog Successful and Don't just blog for money

#9: Do not be Obsessed with PageRank

I have written many articles on PageRank. My PageRank went from 0 to 4 back to an unjustified zero again within a short span of a few months. Although i tried to Explain PageRank, discussed about the Page rank mystery, Facts and Fictions on PageRank, i came to a conclusion that PageRank is only a tool. We don't know what are the actual criteria for its ranking.

Although i did said it is a brilliant tool (see In Defence of PageRank). I am now not so sure after they revised the system. I have learnt not to be too bothered about PageRank. It really does not matters unless your blog is all about writing paid post.

#10: Build traffic one comment at a time.

I have learnt to build traffic one comment at a time. Comments are important. I wish i have time to put comments on all my favourite blogs but we have limited time per day and other commitments (work, family, social). Nevertheless, i have built up a network of friends, which to me is the most valuable asset since i started blogging.

PageRank Problem

I was relectant to admit it at first but my pagerank dropped from PR4 to PR0 even though i think i churned out better posts. My other blog buddies have also encountered this problem.

Not sure whether it had something to do with my paid post review. Anyway, as i mentioned before PageRank is only a tool. We don't know what are the actual criteria for its ranking. Although i did said it is a brilliant tool (see In Defence of PageRank). I am now not so sure after they revised the system. It is weird that some new and not-so-updated blog gets PR4 while established blogs dropped to PR0.

Surprisingly, i was not so bothered by it. I am sure if it is a good measurement system, my PageRank will come back soon. If it does not, it is alright by me. I will still write good posts and continue this project.

I will keep this original blog for a combination of posts (Web traffic, inspiration etc). I will publish in ProjectHeavyTraffic.com only Web traffic related posts.

How Google won the Search Engine war

How did Google win the search engine war? It is plain simplicity! At the time when all the other search engines and directories were cluttering up their portal, Google took a different route of providing a clean cut look for the user to do one task- to search.

I have been a Google user (introduced by a friend) when the Internet community were "Wowed" by the Yahoo, Alta Vista, Excite and the likes. Back then i just wanted to search, that's the reason why i chose Google. I wanted accurate and relevant search results instead of ploughing through links of results which were irrelevant. Little did i expect that from a simple service, Google has grown to becoming one of the most successful company in the world!

PageRank Explained

Wow! Times flies. It is my 89th post already! Thanks guys for witnessing the growth of my little web traffic project.

ok. Back to PageRank...

PageRank is one of the methods Google uses to determine a page’s importance.

It's "simple iterative algorithm"

PR(A) = (1-d) + d (PR(T1)/C(T1) + ... + PR(Tn)/C(Tn))

*PageRank or PR(A)

Here is a very good technical paper on PageRank.

PageRank Explained

Ok. Are you done reading? …you are still awake! Wow! cool…

For your easy reading, interesting points about the article are condensed below:

According to the equation:

Getting inbound links to your site is the only way to increase your site's average PR.

If you add pages to a site you're building the total PR will go up by one for each page (you have to link the pages for it to work), but the average is the same.

If you want to focus the PR into one, then you have to use hierarchical linking.

If you link outbound to other sites, your site's average PR will decrease. The degree of the decrease will depend on the quality of the linking.

Conclusion: PageRank is ONLY ONE OF THE METHODS to get high ranking in a Google search list. What is increasingly important to Google, however (as many evidence and people pointed out) is the text in a link's anchor which decides the relevance of the target page

PageRank - FACTS or FICTIONS

The following are what i gathered from my PageRank/SEO research.

1. It has been said that a new site that is linked from a PR7 site gets crawled by the search engines within several hours and is indexed by Google within 24 hours. That explains why a new site can be popular literally OVERNIGHT!

2. If you are too liberal in exchanging links (especially site with PR zer0), the search engine will not see the website as a trustworthy and authoritative site and your site will suffer in PageRank!

true or false?

Celebrity Blogs & their PageRank

Recently, I watched a local TV programme on bloggers and their methods of getting traffic.

Some of the bloggers like XiaXue (I read her blog a few years ago and went back recently after the TV programme) is very controversial and likes to criticise other bloggers, celebrities, people (hmm...almost everyone under the sun).
Note: XiaXue is supposed to be the blog queen (read: star blogger) in our local scene.

I do not know whether this is her method of drawing traffic (by creating controversial topics) - which she denied flatly in the show, but i personally disagree with the method.

I also find her blog (honestly, not only her blog, many other blogs) uses (quite liberally) vulgar language to the level which i cannot accept.

Some of her post (to her credit), however (minus the vulgarity) is quite humorous.

Well, to each his or her own (style)...just my 2 cents worth of comments.

******************************
Anyway, back to my topic on SEO.
******************************

After the TV show, i began to research on some of these celebrity blogs (for the purpose of my SEO/Pagerank research). I presume that since they had media publicity, they would have the advantage of reach. The following are public info which you can key (the domain) into any pagerank checker and find the info easily. The following are just some of our local celebrity bloggers. Who are your celebrity blogger and what's their PageRank?

It seems XiaXue's pagerank is very good! I wonder why she didn't register her domain for her blog. Anyway, i hope you like this post and would appreciate any comments (note: Any vulgarity WILL be deleted. LOL) . Cheers!

Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) part 1

SEO is Search Engine Optimisation.

Alot of articles likes to sensationalise the term which is nothing more than how to get your site noticed by the search engine (with its algorithum). It is like maths or programming, once you know or guess the alogo then you can be in the game. The question is the criteria are never made known so it is everyone's guess...

For a start, (1) keywords are important. Thus making blog title important as it is the first thing that the Search Engine will pick up. You should make it a point to put the keywords in your content. Take note that you SHOULD NOT flood the key word to the point that disrupt your content. The Search Engine doesn't read the content! I don't think the AI is so intelligent as to interpret the level of interest of the content.

However, if you flood the key words in your post, the search engine will treat it as though you want to play tricks (Search engine is very sensitive in this and can be achieved by algorithem) and they WILL DISCOUNT your site to be an auto or spam site. You will not get the Page Rank you desire.

(2) Secondly, you have to register with the search engines (not only Google please) in the first place. You can see my earlier post on search engine registration. It is one of those first step that i took.

(3) As mentioned in my previous post, PageRank and Backlink count on Google only get visibly updated 3 or 4 times a year these days. So don't be dishearten that your pageRank is n/a or zero. It will come. Continue to build your SEO.

(4) It is a good (or rather a dream) to be linked by someone PR 4 and above. It will contribute to your "Trust and Authority" factor (read: to be linked by them means you deemed to be trusted). (That said, So can anyone with PR 4 and above link me please.)

I will continue to post more of my learning points in my next post. Till next time…

The PageRank Mystery

I am so encouraged by a recent comment by Bill!!!

I put it upfront because it contains important information about Google PageRank that i want to share with all of you!

APPARENTLY, I HAVE THE POTENTIAL TO BE A PAGERANK 3 OR 4.
I was wondering why all my SEO efforts did not work! Hopefully Time will tell.

I will share with you my journey in the next few posts! Cheers!

"PageRank and Backlink count on Google only get visibly updated 3 or 4 times a year these days. You won't see them until after the next update. As long as you are not banned by Google, itappears to me that you have sufficient worthwhile links to get at least a PR3 and perhaps a PR4. In a stretch, they might call it a five but time will tell. What you need to build in order to create lots of traffic are Trust and Authority.I wrote an article on that which you can read and comment on here at my blog:Internet Marketing In 10 Letters"

Now the next question is how to increase "Trust and Authority"? I would appreciate your comments here.

Cheers!
